I appreciate all the support that I received and continue to receive. It is with your support in 2007 we were able to prevail. It is that same support that we were able to fulfill some very long overdue promises. Such as the new Elder’s Wellness Center (House of Respect) and were able to provide housing assistance to over 300 more Tribal Member families in the form of rental assistance, mortgage assistance and down payment assistance in the amount over $7 million dollars. As well as striving for higher levels of accountability and transparency.

Radio Interview with James Miles:

With a combined education and over twenty years of experience in advocating for the betterment of our Tribe as a Tribal Member, Tribal Employee, Member of various committees and commissions and as a former Council Member it is with this experience that I have developed a greater understanding of our tribe’s needs and a greater understanding the areas we need to improve.

I believe in our Tribe, I believe in the strength of our Membership and I believe with your support we can accomplish the following:

Per Capita-I want to address a long time need such as, I feel parents need to have more of a say into their children’s financial future. For starters, we can increase the take home portion of the children’s per capita from $500 dollars a month to at a minimum $1000.00 per month.

Since 2002 the per capita has remained at the same level, but Council Member’s salaries has just about tripled…going from around $70 thousand dollars a year to almost $200 thousand dollars a year. This isn’t right, our people need to come first! As a past council member we froze council’s salaries but in the last 9 months Tribal Council is slipping back into their old ways and bad habits. So therefore, I have and I will continue to promote a cut in Council salaries and will reject any raises until the per capita is increased.

Employment-Our Tribe happens to be one of the largest employers in Pierce County, but we have member’s that apply and apply and get turned down. With your support we can provide a job to any Member who wants to work. I believe every Member should be given the opportunity to work for our Tribe.

Healthcare-Our population is growing at a wonderful rate and we need to provide the necessary resources to our Health Authority in order for them to enhance and maximize the care that they currently provide as well as increase healthcare services to Tribal Members that live outside our service area.

Treaty and Constitutional Rights-We can ensure that the benefit’s the Tribe provides are distributed equally and fairly. We are a Tribe and we need to share our wealth with all Tribal Members and not just a select group and with your support we can fight the taxation of benefits we receive from our tribe.

We need to support our diver’s and their families. The Tribe currently takes 15% of their money every year to pay for the Shellfish Program, which has created a $1.3 million dollar reserve. We need to reduce the shellfish tax to an appropriate level and allow these families to fully benefit.

We need to support our fisherman and their families by developing a new Fish Buying Program that will create a market that provides a fair price for our fish.

With your support we can truly protect our Tribal Sovereignty and the Civil Rights of our Tribal Members by adhering to the Tribal Constitution and Tribal Laws that govern of our tribe. Go to puyalluptribalnews.com to find out more.
