2006 Elections Results: Together, We are Strong!

The former Tribal Council has been weighed and measured, and the record number of voters 768, had decided enough was enough , and voted for a positive change. Full Circle member, David Bean, was overwhelmingly voted into office with nearly four hundred votes, followed by Larry LaPointe and Henry John, ousting incumbent members Maggie Edwards and Sylvia Miller. Fellow Full Circle member, Nancy Shippentower-Games, also received more votes than the incumbents and narrowly missed being elected by only twentyfour votes.

The common theme of this years elections was that there needs to be a change. After countless years of broken promises, unaccountability and bottomless debt, members of the Puyallup Nation united and exercised their rights to vote, breathing new life into a stale Council and giving the Tribe new Hope.

Saturdays turnout, especially of the many younger members, set a great example for their peers and the many that for what ever reason that don't vote, that their vote and lives do matter.

The many surveys submitted by members to the Puyallup Tribal News.com website, clearly showed that tribal unity is the tribes biggest challenge. This has been since the beginning , the Full Circles motto, that “ Together We Are Strong ”! If a hand full of members can have an impact upon the whole, together, united , the tribe can have it any way it wants, in a good way.

It is with great hopes that with new blood on Council, that dialogue can now be established, and the general membership included in decisions that concern their own livelihoods Many issues are at hand for the newly elected, surveys reveal that we want to see the Port carefully developed, to diversify and offset our debt, and take the monetary burden off the revenue of our casinos. Monies should be spent developing Elder's and Youth care with comprehensive programs ran by competent people.

Change won't come over night, but by communicating and working together and remaining diligent, we as a tribe can and will grow in a positive direction for generations to come. It has already begun, and all of you that took time out of your day to express your vote, should applaud and congratulate yourselves. Even though our children that aren't yet old enough to vote, saw and experienced what you did this particular afternoon and learned from it and are better for it.
